Dr. Raul Artal was born in 1943 in a concentration camp in Bershad, Transnistria, a region in eastern Europe annexed to Nazi ally, Romania, in 1941. His birth was high risk and difficult on his mother, but luckily, there was a physician in the camp who was able to save his mother’s life. Following liberation, his family returned to their hometown, which was under Communist rule. After multiple attempts to flee, his family finally escaped to Romania and settled in Israel. Artal met his wife in Israel and moved to St. Louis, Missouri where he served as the chairman of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health at St. Louis University for 17 years. He shares, “my mother’s difficult labor and delivery experience inspired me to become an obstetrician specializing in high-risk obstetrics, high-risk pregnancies.”
